Fairhaven’s Rock Snakes

April 23, 2025 by Staff Writer

By Tim Garcia, Fairhaven Livable Streets Committee

On those beautiful, picturesque days when the sun is bright and the rhythmic seascape waves in that soothing peaceful relaxation, you know those days we’ve been experiencing lately, it is an artistic treat seeing our snakelet friend mature into a healthy adult. While wrapping around Fort Street, our friend has grown. Alas, this snake has grown a lot more than just painted rocks.

Rock Snakes have become cheerful natives throughout New England over the years. There’s “Jake the Snake” in Warwick, RI; “Sheila H. Snake” at the Rocky Point State Park. Prudence Island has “Rocky the Snake.” And then there is “Bronco the Boa” the kindness rock snake of Oakland Park in Burrillville located in the northwest corner of Rhode Island.

This kind of community art is meant for collaborative and creative expression for all ages and offers a prideful joy when seeking out that perfect rock. Imagining a fun concept. Creating a process to bring it to life. At long last, eagerly leaving a gift for all patrons to rejoice in.

This rock snake at Fort Phoenix has more than 500 painted rocks and stretches the whole block. Photo courtesy of Tim Garcia.

In Fairhaven we have spawned additional Rock Snakes. One of which can be found in Livesey Park. This friend has found a majestic flower garden to call home. Then there is “Westie” on the walk to West Island. There is another Rock Snake that has been spotted in Fairhaven. Do you know where?

The OG Rock Snake on Old Fort Road, by last count, is approximately 500+ individually painted rocks. I am sure our friend will continue to grow.

A Rock Snake named “Rockwell” living in Draper, Utah, grew so big it was relocated to a new home to accommodate its massive size. Over 4000 decorated rocks carefully changed residence to Draper Park and the Utah Arts Alliance.

Will our Rock Snakes do this?I suppose it is up to us and time will tell.

Come check out Fairhaven’s community art as the warm weather approaches, teases us, and finally makes its return. These livable streets throughout town have so much to offer. Our historical architecture bridges heritage and character. Farmer’s markets and festivals offer a sweet homecoming for those who’ve been gone awhile.

It’s the sense of adventure calling out the masses to continue exploring our streets and pathways throughout Fairhaven. Fun and interesting things we’ll find, community artwork being one of them.

As for our friend who’s found a spectacular hidden gem of a location to thrive, I leave it to you. Have fun seeking out and hopefully adding your unique decorative rock. Join us, because the journey is so much fun.

Maybe naming our Rock Snakes too. “Squiggles”? Anyone…Anyone?
