Bicyclist Injured by Pickup Truck

Lt. Kevin Kobza reports that the Fairhaven Police Department responded to a collision involving an off-duty Fairhaven police officer and a bicyclist on Monday afternoon.
On Monday, July 29, at approximately 3:15 p.m., Fairhaven police responded to a report of a crash at the intersection of Rt. 6 and Narragansett Boulevard. Officers arrived to discover a 35-year-old man had been struck by a vehicle. The motorist, an off-duty Fairhaven police officer operating their personal Ram pickup truck, remained at the scene and was cooperative.
An on-scene investigation indicated that the cyclist rode in front of the Ram on Rt. 6 when the Ram struck the bicycle. As a matter of policy, both due to the fact that the bicyclist suffered injuries and because the crash involved an employee of the Fairhaven Police Department, the department contacted the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section (CARS) to conduct an investigation.
The bicyclist was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital by ambulance. The motorist was uninjured. The crash remains under investigation.
Car Crash Ends in Fatality on Main Street in Fairhaven

Lt. Kevin Kobza reports that the Fairhaven Police Department responded to the scene of a fatal accident on Saturday night.
On Saturday, Aug. 3, at about 7:11 p.m., officers responded to reports of a motor vehicle crash involving a Chevy Silverado truck and moped on Main Street in the area of Riverside Cemetery near the Route 195 overpass.
The driver of the moped was seriously injured. Fairhaven Fire Department paramedics transported the moped driver by medical ambulance to St. Luke’s Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
The Chevy Silverado’s driver left the scene.
A preliminary investigation determined that the moped and Silverado both were traveling southbound at the time of the crash.
The moped driver, later identified as Alexis Alvarez, 29, of Brockton, was rushed to Saint Luke’s Hospital and later pronounced deceased.
In an update on 8/6/24, the Bristol County District Attorney’s office said that Ryan Almeida, 35, of Fairhaven was arraigned on charges of Leaving the Scene-Death Resulting and Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon-Substantial Injury.
At the arraignment, Assistant District Attorney Russ Eonas described the crash as a road rage incident. Mr. Almeida was released on bail.
The crash was investigated by the Fairhaven Police Department, State Police Crime Prevention and Control (CPAC) Unit, and the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.

Fairhaven Police Department Responds to Mental Health Emergency

Lt. Kevin Kobza reports that the Fairhaven Police Department responded to a disturbance at a home on West Island early Tuesday morning.
At approximately 4:45 a.m., Fairhaven Police responded to a home on Ebony Street for a report of a man using a hammer to try to gain entry to a sliding glass door.
Upon arrival, officers located a 56-year-old Fairhaven man who was suffering a mental health emergency. The man has a history of mental illness and is known to police.
Officers ordered the man to drop the hammer and he complied. The man then fled from police and was later located and taken by ambulance to a local hospital to undergo a mental health evaluation.
The man did not gain entry to the home and no injuries were reported during the incident.
The man will face charges likely to include Vandalism and Disorderly Conduct. The investigation remains active and ongoing. His identity is not being released at this time.
Neighb News sources identify the man as Daniel DeCosta, and the address as 166 Ebony Street, where his mother, Jacqueline DeCosta lives with her husband Antonio Alfonso. The house he tried break into was 173 Dogwood, where two young children reside with their parents.
