The Fairhaven Historical Society held their annual meeting on Wednesday, June 13 and elected a new board. The new president is Timothy Evans, the vice president is Allegra Pawlowski and the remaining officers are Nancy Perry as secretary and Debbie Davis as Treasurer. New board members are Natalie Mello, Nils Isaaksen, Jennifer Forbes and Enrique Goytizolo. Currently serving board members are Mark Badwey and Maryann Krane.
Goytizolo is stepping down after many years of serving as president of the Fairhaven Historical Society, and the scholarship is in recognition of his service. It will be granted to a member of the graduating class of Fairhaven High School who is interested in studying history in their college experience.
The application will consist of an essay by the student concerning their connection with the history of the Town of Fairhaven and how they view the importance of studying history.
The society recognized the passing of two individuals, Al Benac and Cynthia McNaughton, who were important in the organization and contributed greatly to the town.
The historical society also presented the 2018 annual house award to David Duquette of 66 Washington Street for his thoughtful and wonderful renovation, preserving his home in Fairhaven.
Upcoming events hosted by the Fairhaven Historical Society include a lecture on Friday, July 27 “The History of Cuttyhunk and the Elizabeth Islands” by Seth Mendel, President Emeritus — Mattapoisett Historical Society. The lecture is being hosted in conjunction with the West Island Improvement Association and will be held at 7 p.m. at the West Island Improvement Association building. The event is being partly underwritten by the Cuttyhunk Ferry Company.
This Summer, the Museum at the Academy Building will be open during Huttleston Marketplace, Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Also, the annual “Picnic on the Lawn,” sponsored by Howe Allen Realty to benefit the Fairhaven Historical Society, will be held on August 4th from 5-8 pm on the lawn of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Fairhaven.
