Fairhaven Fire Department Press Release
On Saturday, 1/28/23, at 7:49 a.m., the Fairhaven Fire Department and the Fairhaven Harbormaster responded to a diesel fuel spill in the harbor near Union Wharf. (Union Street, Fairhaven MA)
The fishing vessel (F/V) Jack M, reported an equipment malfunction that spilled an unknown quantity of diesel fuel into the harbor. The spill located at Union Wharf extended as far north near the Seaport Inn and Marina. The spill impacted Fairhaven Shipyard, Blue Harvest Seafoods, Pease Park Boat Ramp, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, and the Seaport Inn.
Fairhaven Fire Department and the Fairhaven Harbormaster division remained on scene for three (3) hours and deployed 680 ft of absorbent boom, and 2100 ft of absorbent sweep, along with several hundred absorbent pads to help contain and absorb the diesel fuel.
The owner of the vessel is cooperating and has contracted with Frank Corp Environmental located in New Bedford Massachusetts to complete the cleanup.
Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and the United States Coast Guard Pollution Control are investigating the cause of the malfunction.
