Massachusetts and the nation held midterm elections this week. On Tuesday, 11/8, voters chose to elect all members of the House of Representatives (Congress), whose terms are two years. Some states had contests for senator, who have six-year terms. Massachusetts did not have a senator’s race, but voters did vote for governor and Lt. Governor. There were also four statewide ballot questions.
In Fairhaven, voters chose winner Democrat Maura Healey and running mate Kim Driscoll over Republican Geoff Diehl and running mate Leah Cole Allen, 3626 to 2992; Libertarian Party candidate Kevin Reed received 118 votes. Acushnet went the other way, choosing Rep. Diehl over Dem. Healey, 2264 to 1660; with Reed getting 72 votes.
In the Attorney General’s Race, Fairhaven again went for the winning Democrat, with Acushnet choosing the Republican giving Andrea Campbell (D) 3541 votes to Rep. James McMahon’s 3098 in Fairhaven; and McMahon receiving 2321 to Campbell’s 1632 in Acushnet.
In the Secretary of State race, incumbent William Galvin coasted to victory, with Fairhaven choosing him over challenger Rayla Campbell 3936 to 2580; and Acushnet choosing Campbell 2002 to 1891.
In the Treasurer’s reace, incumbent Deborah Goldberg (D) coasted to victory over challenger Cristina Crawford (R), with Fairhaven choosing the winner 4132 to 1678, and Acushnet also choosing Goldberg 2132 to 1267.
In the Auditor’s race, Democrat Anthony Amore seemed poised to win statewide above Diana Dizoglio (R) with Fairhaven choosing DiZoglio over Amore 3151 to 2809; and Acushnet choosing Amore 2134 to 1507.
Regionally, House of Representative (Congress) incumbent Bill Keating (D) won over challenger Jesse Brown (R), with Fairhaven choosing Keating 3880 to 2742 for Brown; and Acushnet choosing Brown over Keating 2108 to 1847.
For State Rep., incumbent William Straus (D) was poised to beat challenger Jeffrey Swift (R), but the race had not been called by press time, with Fairhaven choosing Straus 3904 to 2742; and Acushnet choosing Swift 677 to 635. Acushnet is split, with precincts 2 and 3 voting for Evan Gendreu (R) over incumbent Paul Schmid (D), 1463 to 1131.
As of press time, the race for Bristol County Sheriff had not been called, with incumbent Thomas Hodgson (R) trailing challenger Paul Heroux (D) statewide, and Fairhaven choosing Heroux 3633 to 3080; and Acushnet choosing Hodgson 2308 to 1656.
Only one of the four ballot questions had been called by press time, with Question #2 (Dental Insurance) passing by a huge margin.
Question 1, the so-called “Millionaires tax,” had not been called, but was 51.9% to 48.1% in favor with 81.83% of precincts reporting.
Question 3 (liquor licenses) had not been called by press time, with no votes holding a substantial 55% to 45% lead at press time.
Question 4 (immigrant driving licenses) had not been called by press time, with the yes vote ahead 53.5% to 46.5% with 80.29% reporting.
Fairhaven voted no on one 3454 to 3139; Acushnet voted no 2492 to 1426. Fairhaven voted yes on two 4150 to 2414; Acushnet voted yes 2201 to 1673. Fairhaven voted no on three 4227 to 2285; Acushnet voted no 2650 to 1220. Fairhven voted no on four 3777 to 2802; Acushnet voted no 2563 to 1339.
Turnout in Fairhaven was 55%, and 40% in Acushnet. All results are unofficial. They will be certified in a few days.
As of press time, the control of both the Senate and the House had not been decided, with too many races still too close to call.
