Seventh graders in John Sladewski’s photography class at Elizabeth Hastings Middle School partnered with seniors from the Fairhaven Council on Aging as part of an intergenerational service-learning project.
In November, 20 photography students and five senior citizens went on a field trip to Fort Phoenix to make photographs, then all returned to the classroom at EHMS to work on their digital photos.
The seniors and students shared stories while they worked on the images. The students taught the seniors basics in photography and how to use digital devices to shoot photos. Students also taught the seniors how to use Adobe Lightroom to edit, process, and print their photographs.
With the photos, the students created a photo montage measuring approximately 4×2.5 feet that they presented to the COA on December 16 during a ceremony with the partners and family members. The artwork will be permanently installed at the Council on Aging.
