Tucked away in history as one of the world’s oldest waterdogs, the Barbet (bar-bay) is a breed like no other. Beloved in Europe and Canada for centuries, this intelligent affectionate companion is finally making its mark in the U.S. However, with only a few thousand in the country and just five AKC breeders, the Barbet remains a well-kept secret.
Unlike other breeders, I am the only UKC Barbet breeder listed in the United States. My love for this ancient, pure breed led me to the United Kennel Club (UKC), where family participation in showing dogs is at the heart of its values. Unlike commercialized dog shows, UKC events allow only family members to present their dogs, ensuring that every champion title is earned through dedication and love.
The Barbet’s rich history dates back to the Middle Ages, and one of its most famous owners was King Henry IV of France (1553-1610). Known for his deep affection for the breed, the King was often seen with his loyal Barbet by his side. These dogs were prized for their keen intelligence, affectionate nature, and remarkable water-retrieving abilities, making them favorites among both royalty and hunters.
The breed’s name comes from the French word barbe, meaning “beard” referring to their distinctive, curly coated faces. While once widespread, the Barbet nearly disappeared in the 20th century due to wars and declining hunting traditions. Thankfully, dedicated breeders across France and Europe worked tirelessly to preserve this exceptional breed, leading to its resurgence today.
Our Barbet journey took an exciting turn when our veterinarian encouraged us to bring a litter into the world — and we did! On March 12, 2025, we welcomed 10 beautiful, healthy puppies, each one registered with their UKC champion pedigree. They will be ready to go home to their forever families April 26th at eight weeks old.

More than just beautiful companions, Barbets are highly intelligent, easy to train and eager to serve their owner. Their natural versatility makes them outstanding family dogs, therapy dogs, and hunting or exercise partners. Did I mention that the Barbet is hypoallergenic and does not shed; the coat is hair not fur and is as soft as chinchilla.
Whether retrieving from the water, excelling in obedience or simply providing unwavering companionship, a Barbet quickly becomes a cherished member of the family.
Now we want to share this rare and extraordinary breed with our neighbors. If you’re looking for a dog that is both loving and capable, a Barbet might be the perfect fit for your heart and home.
