Hunting Season is almost here. Hunters will be out in the wooded areas around us, including some that have hiking paths. Please wear bright orange for your own safety.
The following dates are for Zone 11, which includes our coverage area (Acushnet, Dartmouth, Fairahven, Marion, Mattapoisett, New Bedford).
Hunting season for deer will open on 10/7 for archery. Shotgun season for deer is from 12/2 to 12/14. Primitive firearms for deer is 12/16 to 12/31.
Pheasant season is 10/19 to 11/2; quail is 10/19 to 11/30; wild turkey is 10/21 to 11/2.
Certain species may be taken year round, such as sone squirrel species, and some birds, so do not be alarmed if you hear shots outside of the dates.
Despite some rumors to the contratry there is an open season on certain furbearing pest. Coyotes may be taken from 10/19 to 3/7/20; foxes may be taken from 11/1 to 2/29/20; oppossum season is open now until 1/31/20. With the exception of coyotes, furbearers may not be hunted during the shotgun deer season.
Trapping has different dates, and generallly includes all of November. Trapping for muskrat, opossum, raccoon and skunk runs from 11/1 to 2/29/20.
No hunting is allowed on Sundays in Massachusetts.
