Dear Frankie

August 3, 2022 by Staff Writer

Back to School

Dear Frankie,

The humans say no one likes a change. Boy, are they right! I have been walking to school with the same neighborhood friends since kindergarten. Many of us have been in the same class for six years.

In September, we start middle school and attend the one we were assigned in the lottery. I’m heartsick that I won’t attend the same school as some of my closest friends. I’m also upset about riding on the school bus. I dread being packed in with a bunch of dogs barking at the top of their lungs and jumping over one another to get a good seat. The thought of it is enough to make me become a truant.

Do you think I could convince my new principal that I need a cab voucher? Before I wrote to you, I asked my mother if she would drive me to school. All she did was roll her eyes. So that’s not an option.

Quincy

Dear Quincy,

If your principal gives you a voucher, I’m sure many of my readers would love to know what you said, so they can try it with their principal. All I can say is, “Lots of luck to all of you.”

I understand that riding on a school bus with loud and unruly dogs can be unpleasant. But school buses are one of the unpleasant facts of life, like dentists, getting drenched in the rain, cleaning your room, etc. Need I go on?

If the noise on the bus bugs you, wear earplugs or zone out. If it’s the pushing and shoving, wait until everyone gets on the bus and then get on and take whatever seat is available.

Canines often worry about problems that never materialize or aren’t as bad as anticipated. I suggest you enjoy your time before school begins, stop wringing your paws, and face this new phase of your life as an adventure.

Best, Frankie
