Maisie Goes to College
Dear Frankie,
Masie is my human sibling. Last week when she came home from school, my mom said, “The letter from the college is on the kitchen counter.”
As Maisie read it, she started to cry and shout, “I can’t believe it, I got in.”
Then my mom started crying and said, “Oh, if only your dad were here, he would have been so proud.”
Finally, they explained that Maisie was accepted to her father’s alma mater. I was also happy for Maisie and glad that all her hard work and late nights studying had paid off. That night when Maisie and I were snuggling in her bed, she told me how much she would miss her slumber pal. I had no idea what she was talking about. She said you know when I go away to college. Since then, I have been beyond depressed. I can’t imagine I’ll ever have a decent night of sleep after she leaves. I don’t know what I am going to do without her.
Francine
Dear Francine,
Unfortunately, Maisie didn’t tell you she was applying to out-of-state colleges. So, you weren’t prepared that she might be going away to college.
It will take a while for you to get used to the idea. Once you do, I suggest you focus on the positive aspects of Maisie being away. Here are a few thoughts that came to mind.
First, you will have the whole bed to yourself and be able to stretch out and sleep on the pillows. You will also get more of your mom’s time and attention because she and Maisie won’t be out shopping on Saturdays. She also won’t be going to Maisie’s field hockey games. Your mom might even turn to you for comfort as she becomes accustomed to being an empty nester. So be ready to step up to that emotional plate.
Will you miss Maisie, of course, but there are always cell phone calls and texts. If you keep busy with your exercise routine, stretches, meditating, and deep breathing, the next thing you know, it will be Thanksgiving, and she’ll be back.
Best, Frankie
