Dumped for a Dame
Dear Frankie,
For years, I have been hanging out with my neighbor Brian. He’s a bachelor. He often invited me over when he came home from work and made his dinner. I also stayed with Brian whenever my family went out of town.
Last year he started dating a lady named Emily. Once things started getting heated up, he wasn’t around as much as he had been in the past.
I missed our times together, but I was also glad he had found a special friend. Recently Brian told me that he and Emily were getting married. That’s when he broke the news that I wouldn’t be invited to his house anymore because Emily was allergic to dogs.
He tried to soften the blow by saying that didn’t mean we still couldn’t go for walks and play catch. Even if we did, it wouldn’t be the same. I’m beyond sad.
Rusty
Dear Rusty,
It is sad when a friend’s life circumstances change, and you don’t get to spend as much time together or in the same way as you did before.
You are right. Going for walks isn’t the same as sleepovers and having dinner together.
As sad as it might be, if you want to have a relationship with Brian, you have no choice but to accept that the time you spend together in the future will be different. Have you considered that Emily might see how much Brian enjoys being with you and might also take you for a walk?
Best, Frankie
