Dear Frankie

October 28, 2021 by Staff Writer

Winter’s Saving Grace

Dear Frankie,

I usually dread the thought of the weather getting colder. The only saving grace is I don’t have to attend those outside summer cocktail parties with my parents.

The parties would be fine if they lasted for an hour. All I need is about an hour to con my parent’s friends into sneaking me a treat or two.

Unfortunately, when a party drags on, the alcohol consumption tends to rise, along with the guests’ bad manners. I can’t tell you how many times one of them has had the nerve to pick me up, look me in the eye, and breath their stinky breath on my face.

Where do these people get off mauling someone else’s dog? Does this happen to other dogs, or is it just the people my parents have as friends?

Jaime

P.S. My dad is a nondrinker, and my mom only drinks one glass of wine at parties.

Dear Jaime,

Your letter is the second one I received this week about inebriated guests mishandling dogs at parties.

Unfortunately, your experience at cocktail parties seems to be pretty much par for the course. There’s no getting around it: heavy drinkers are a pawful for canines. I find the martini drinkers the worst.

The TV has recently had stories on the rise of alcohol consumption related to COVID. My strategy at cocktail parties is to get as much food as you can, stake out an out-of-the-way bush to hide under, and stay there until it’s time to go home.

I’m glad you clarified your parents’ drinking habits. I would hate to think you had to ride home with a driver under the influence.

Best, Frankie
