Oldest Sibling
Dear Frankie,
I have two little brothers, Ritz (age 4) and Cracker (age 3). When they first joined our family at ten weeks old, I was thrilled to look after them. I didn’t mind cleaning up after their paper-shredding sprees, their pablum footprints, or their little accidents. They were irresistibly cute, I adored them, and they made every day more fun.
But now, I’m not as spry or energetic as I once was, and they still leave messes everywhere.
When I ask my parents for help, my dad just says, “They are just kids, and families take care of one another.”
But who is looking out for me?
Olivia
Dear Olivia,
You are not the first oldest sister to become their sibling’s caregiver.
It’s easy for a family when one person does all the hard work for everyone else.
But that’s not fair to you. I suggest you put your paw down and tell your parents and brothers that you won’t help unless everyone pitches in.
When they see what the house looks like when you are not keeping it in order, they may come to their senses and agree to do their share.
If they don’t do their part, whatever you do, don’t be a martyr, and rescue them.
Best, Frankie
