National Dog Day
Dear Frankie,
The upcoming holiday season has me thinking about how much people spend on holidays from Halloween to New Year’s Day. In 2024, they spent 994.1 billion on holiday shopping — including gifts, travel, and entertainment. In 2025, they spent 34 billion dollars on Mother’s Day and 24 billion on Father’s Day.
It does make me wonder why more was spent on mothers than on fathers. But I’ll leave that for another time. Yet how many Americans celebrate National Dog Day or know when it is celebrated? It’s August 26, if anyone is interested.
When I looked up how much Americans spend on that holiday, I found no information available. American dog owners say their dogs are family members and like their children. So why don’t they spend big bucks on us on our holiday?

Dear Jake,
If American dog owners really see their dogs as family, they should show it by celebrating National Dog Day.
Maybe they just haven’t thought about it much before, but now that they know the date, there’s no reason not to honor their dogs like they do the rest of the family.
