Dear Frankie

September 17, 2025 by Staff Writer

The Love of My Life

Dear Frankie,

Ralph was the love of my life, my best friend, and partner. We grew up together and raised four litters of pups.

Now that he is gone, I realize the dog I thought I was, couldn’t have been further from the truth.

If you asked me when Ralph was alive to describe myself, I would have said I’m energetic, decisive, and a joiner. Who was I kidding?

Since he is gone, I can’t make a decision without second-guessing myself, plan my day, or muster up enough energy to go to the dog park.

How does someone who was part of a couple all of their life learn to live alone?

Marlin

Dear Marlin,

Losing a lifelong partner is a huge adjustment. Suddenly, you lack someone to talk to, share meals with, seek advice from, or walk with.

Friends can help fill these gaps, but connecting will require reaching out and planning. At first, this will feel exhausting. Over time, though, you’ll create a new routine: walking with others, dining with a friend, volunteering, or meeting people who have also lost partners. You might even find a new partner.

For now, you are coping with the loss of Ralph, an end to a chapter, and an uncertain future. It’s overwhelming. But with patience and kindness to yourself, Marlin, you will find your way forward.

Best, Frankie
