Life in the Wild
Dear Frankie,
I’ve been watching cowboy movies lately. That started me thinking about what my life would have been like if I were a wolf.
I still feel sad that I had to leave my mom and siblings when I was ten weeks old. I have often wonder what happened to my brothers and sisters.
I never saw or heard about them after my human family adopted me. I don’t know where they live or if they were adopted by a kind family like mine.
If I were a wolf, I would have stayed with my mom and siblings and lived in a pack with other wolves.
I don’t want my adoptive parents to know I have written to you for fear that it might hurt their feelings. So, I’m signing off with my make-believe wolf name.
Sky
Dear Sky,
Loving parents want to know their children’s worries and concerns so they can help them understand their feelings, offer comfort, and be there to listen.
I doubt your parents would be hurt if they knew you sometimes thought about being a wolf. Most of us fantasize about what life would be like if we were someone else. I sometimes wonder what being a show dog or a herding dog would be like.
Leaving your mom and littermates was difficult for you. You seem to be handling that loss by imagining living in a world that doesn’t require its young to separate from their family.
I urge you to talk with your parents. You might start the conversation by asking them if they ever thought of being someone else, and then share your thoughts about being a wolf. How does that sound?
Best, Frankie
