Car Rides
Dear Frankie,
I don’t understand why dogs like riding in cars, sitting on their parents’ laps while driving, or hanging their heads out of the window.
Every time I’m in a car, I either feel dizzy, queasy, or an anxiety attack coming on. Despite my protests, my mom insists it’s the only option she has to get me to the vet, groomer, daycare, or see her friends and relatives.
You would think that in 2025, more canine home-based services would be available. I can’t be the only dog that detests riding in a car.
Lulu
Dear Lulu,
You are correct; not all dogs feel comfortable riding in a car. I have been told that some dogs find traveling in a dog carrier placed on the floor of the back seat makes riding easier. When enclosed in a snug space, dogs report they are less affected by the car’s motion and less overstimulated by the vehicles, people, and scenery passing by.
Dogs with motion sickness find taking a pill a half hour before a ride can also help. Maybe your mom’s friends and relatives would be willing to visit you at your house if they knew the toll the car took on you.
If none of these strategies work and home services aren’t an option, I fear going by car is something you must accept. Consider the consequences of not keeping these appointments — rabies and matted fur are no joke.
Best, Frankie
