Dear Frankie

March 12, 2025 by Staff Writer

Immigrants

Dear Frankie,

Last week, men wearing uniforms with the letters ICE on their jackets arrested several families, including my friend George’s family. He said they handcuffed his parents and took them, along with his two sisters, away in a van. George said it happened so fast they didn’t have a chance to say goodbye.

On the first night, George came to stay with us, my parents assured him that no matter what happened, he would always have a home with us. Whenever George asks my parents where his family is and when they will return, they say not to worry; we hope it will be soon.

Well, George is worried. He is also becoming more anxious by the day that he may never see his family again. Why won’t my parents tell George where his family is and why they were taken away?

Wilson

Dear Wilson,

Your parents may not know where George’s family is. But they do understand why they and the other families were taken away. The men from ICE arrested George’s parents because they suspected they were illegal immigrants. Illegal immigrants are people who didn’t get permission to live in our country and stayed here even though it wasn’t legal to do so.

If the ICE men determine George’s parents are here illegally, and I suspect they will, George’s family will be sent back to the country they came from.

Until your parents know for sure what the outcome for George’s family will be, they don’t want to tell him he will never see his family again, which will be devastating for him to hear, nor do they want to give him false hope.

Your parents understand how difficult this is for George, so they tell him what they know and can promise: that he will always have a home with you and your family.

Best, Frankie
