Dear Frankie

December 4, 2024 by Staff Writer

Thanksgiving Blues

Dear Frankie,

I was so excited that my aunts, uncles, and cousins were coming to our house for Thanksgiving because I’d get to lick the turkey pan.

When I heard my Aunt Luella and Cousin Georgie, who are allergic to dogs, were coming, I knew it meant I’d spend the day in the back bedroom. My mom said she was sorry I couldn’t be with the family and promised to bring me a turkey dinner, save the turkey pan, turn on the TV so I could watch the Macy Thanksgiving Parade, and let me play video games.

I’m bummed out about spending the holiday by myself. It will be torture to hear my family talking and laughing and not be with them. I can’t wait for Thanksgiving to be over.

Raymond

Dear Raymond,

Raymond, I understand you feel left out, but all is not lost. If your mom serves dinner after the Thanksgiving parade, your nonallergic relatives could watch the parade with you. Some might even choose to have their dinner with you and play video games.

There are also pills that allergic people take to prevent a reaction to dogs. Your mom should pass this information on to your aunt. Your mom could also put up a gate that would allow you to join in the holiday fun while keeping you at a distance from your aunt and cousin.

Why don’t you suggest to your mom that there are alternative ways to accommodate you and the allergic relatives? Once she sees what they are, she might take you up on a few of your ideas.

Best, Frankie
