Dear Frankie

October 16, 2024 by Staff Writer

Three’s a Crowd

Dear Frankie,

My mom is a big believer in choices. She knows that Halloween is not my favorite holiday. So, when she asked me how I would like to spend Halloween this year, I said in bed under the covers.

She wasn’t amused. She said I could participate in the Halloween Dog Parade or trick-or-treat with my brother Peter. Talk about being between a rock and a hard place.

If I choose the parade, it will be beyond humiliating to be seen by my friends from the park. If I decide to go with Peter, my chances for bodily harm are pretty high. Peter and his friends think beating up one another with water balloons and flour-filled socks is hilarious.

I don’t know if you have ever been hit by one of those socks, but they can leave bruises for weeks. I don’t know what I should do.

Clyde

Dear Clyde,

Definitely, choose the parade. Getting your ego dented is a far better choice than getting your body bruised. I suggest you tell your friends at the park why you will be in the parade and ask them to be sensitive to your feelings and not tease you.

As for your mother, it’s unclear why she insists on asking you to do something you find distasteful and makes you feel uncomfortable. I believe her time would be better spent knowing what Peter is doing and providing him and his friends some supervision on Halloween Night.

Sorry, I have no suggestions for springing you from the parade. Perhaps if you consider it a couple of uncomfortable hours once a year to please your mom, it will make it more palatable.

Best, Frankie
