Dear Frankie,
I live in an elephant sanctuary even though I’m not an elephant. My parents run the place, so we live in a house on the grounds.
I also work as a companion to an elephant named Sparkle. She is the best elephant you can imagine. Sparkle came to us five years ago from a crummy circus she had worked at for twenty years. Saying she wasn’t treated well is an understatement. It didn’t matter if she was sick or bruised so bad she could hardly walk; her rotten trainer made her perform.
Fortunately, when the circus went broke, we had room for her. When she first came to us, she was very timid and confused. She had lived her whole life with chains on her legs. She had to learn to walk all over again.
Seeing how she struggled, my parents suggested I hang out with her and show her the ropes. We hit it off immediately and are now best friends and constant companions. I eat most of my meals with Sparkle and sleep beside her most nights in the barn.
My problem is the other elephants now want a companion.
Can you post a job opening for elephant companions in your column? Compensation for the position includes food, shelter, a forever home, a few bucks for snacks, and an opportunity to be loved by one of the most majestic creatures that ever walked this earth.
Buck
Dear Buck,
Of course, I will post the job. I will also notify the shelters about the position.
I hope the sanctuary has a big mailbox and a lot of openings.
If I didn’t have to take care of my mom, I would apply in a heartbeat. Keep me posted on how many dogs were hired and how it’s going for them and the elephants.
Best, Frankie
