Dance Debacle
Dear Frankie,
Miranda, the “it” girl at my doggie daycare, invited me to a party she was giving next month. It took me less than a second to say, “Sounds good to me. Count me in.”
I thought saying something casual like that would make her think I was cool.
I told Humph about the party, and he said, “I hope you know how to dance. Miranda is a great dancer. She always has a DJ who plays Latin music at her parties.”
I thought to myself, how hard could it be to learn a few cha-cha steps? I watched a few YouTube videos on Latin dancing. When I realized they were no help, I asked my sister if she would teach me a few Latin dance steps. She tried, and believe me, so did I, but I am no dancer for whatever reason.
Now that I have decided not to go to the party, I need to tell Miranda, but I don’t want her to think I’m a loser. I forgot that my family had planned a trip out of town the weekend of the party. I could also call her the day of the party and say I was sick.
Otis
Dear Otis,
Not knowing how to dance, especially to Latin Music, is not a personal flaw. Lots of people can’t dance. Some think they can and make fools of themselves on the dance floor. Better to know your limits. Honesty is the best policy. Lying is not an option.
Tell Miranda that Humph was surprised you were invited because you are not a dancer. Then, see what she says. She might say it is a Latin dance party and didn’t realize you weren’t a dancer. Then tell her you don’t know how to dance and thank her for the invitation.
She might also say Humph was misinformed. Not all of her parties have dancing — the party you are invited to is a dinner party with games afterward. It is always best to have your facts straight before deciding on a course of action.
Best, Frankie
