Dear Frankie

February 14, 2024 by Staff Writer

The Coyotes

Dear Frankie,

The principal called an emergency assembly to tell us that a dog had been killed by the coyotes last week. She said it was mating season, and the coyotes were coming into town looking for food.

Sky asked what mating season was, and the principal said it was when the coyotes found a partner to have kits in the spring. Baby coyotes are called kits.

Since this announcement, I have been having terrible dreams about being chased by a pack of coyotes, and just before they pounce on me, I wake up shaking.

I told several of my classmates about my dreams, and Henry said that he heard that dreams predict what will happen.

Is that true, Frankie? Am I going to be eaten up by the coyotes?

Laramy

Dear Laramy,

Don’t listen to Henry. Dreams don’t predict the future. He doesn’t know what he is talking about.

Dreams are based on one’s thoughts or worries. It’s pretty scary to hear that one of your own lost their life in such a violent way. So now that you have been forewarned, which is a good thing, you can do some things to protect yourself.

First and foremost, check your surroundings whenever you are outside to ensure the coast is clear. Also, never go out alone or if you can help it when it is dark.

Whenever you are out, day or night, walk on a short leash close to a human, preferably one who carries a big stick. If you have to go out at night, make it a quick trip and be sure your human has a flashlight and carries a can full of pennies to shake. Coyotes are timid creatures and don’t like bright lights or loud noises.

If you do all I have suggested, you will be fine. You might also have the good fortune to get a glimpse of a litter of kits in the spring.

Best, Frankie
