Dear Frankie,
My friend Herbert was adopted by a Romanian Orthodox family. Every year the priest at his church blesses him. I asked him why, and he said so he would be healthy and not die.
My family doesn’t go to church, so I have never been blessed. Does that mean I could die this year?
Tudor
Dear Tudor,
I wouldn’t put much stock in Herbert’s interpretation.
The priest’s annual blessing of the animals is a wish for their well-being. It’s not an insurance policy against illness and death in the coming year. It’s similar to someone wishing you a Happy Birthday or Good Luck on an upcoming test.
If you watch your diet, exercise, and get enough sleep, chances are your health will be fine for another year.
Best, Frankie
