In the Doghouse
Dear Frankie,
My dad recently got the bright idea to build me a doghouse as a place I could go when I needed some me time.
He explained it would be like his man cave, without however the TV, the refrigerator filled with treats and beer, the pool table, the video games, and the dart board.
Why he thinks any self-respecting canine would enjoy spending time in a wooden structure outside that dosen’t have heat, AC, or a foam mattress is beyond me.
In addition, why do I have to go outside to have time alone? I spend a lot of time by myself when he and my mom go to work, have a “date night,” run errands, go to the gym, etc.
Why can’t the humans leave well enough alone?
Tinker
Dear Tinker,
The humans see their dogs as a member of the family. They also believe their dogs have human-like thoughts, feelings, and opinions.
Your dad loves his man cave, so he thinks you would also like a “room” of your own. He’s not chaining you to the doghouse and making you live in it full-time. He’s offering you a place to go if you would like to be by yourself.
How many dogs do you know that have a second home? Look, we have all received presents from loved ones who thought we would be knocked out by their gift, which left us wondering, “Is this a joke?”
It won’t kill you to spend some time in the doghouse when he is around to show you appreciate the effort he made on your behalf.
This is not a third-world problem, Tinker. You definitely need to lighten up.
Best, Frankie
