Who Would’ve Thought, Part 2
Dear Frankie,
A couple of months ago, I was elected to serve on the advisory board for my dog park. Ted, a neighbor, was also elected.
I knew of Ted from seeing him around the neighborhood, but we weren’t friends. After the board meetings, Ted and I began walking home together. That’s when I learned he had been a certified service dog for his grandma before she passed away and that he was now volunteering at the local children’s hospital.
The more time I spent with Ted, the more I liked and respected him. I now realize my feelings for him are romantic. I don’t know, however, how he feels about me. Should I say something to him or let nature take its course?
Alice
Dear Alice,
My last column addressed the anxiety associated with disclosing romantic feelings to someone you fear may think of you only as a friend.
There are many ways to express one’s emotions without stating them directly. You might tell Ted how much you admire him for his service to the humans, both young and old. You could also tell him the things you like about him. When you get to your house, you could invite him in for a bone nightcap.
You could also suggest meeting at the dog park to discuss advisory board issues further. This buys you more face-to-face time and gives you an opportunity to see how Ted responds to you. If, at times, you notice he gets a moony expression when he looks at you or laughs heartedly at your jokes, you can assume he’s interested. If you seek a more immediate answer, read my last column.
Best, Frankie
