John Hergenhan spoke with the Neighb News a year or two ago about his daffodils and tulips. Anyone who has driven on Sconticut Neck Road has seen them in the early spring as they bloomed, filling up the whole extra lot on the corner of Smith Street.
It is with great sadness that I must report that Mr. Hergenhan died in February. I did not realize it until I decided to put his beautiful daffodil field on the cover this week.
I thought it would be a surprise for him, as we had talked about it before, but I never got around to it.
I hope his wife enjoys these photos. The sun was not out on the day I took them, so some of the blooms were closed compared to a day or two before when I didn’t have my camera with me. But the sheer volume and beauty of these daffodils and tulips that still bloomed on a somewhat colder day, even though John was not there to tend to them, just proves the loving care that he and his wife Laura have shown to these colorful blooms for so many years.
Our condolences to the family, and please know that many people have enjoyed these flowers over the years.
You brought color and beauty to your neighborhood, John, and for that, we thank you.
Rest in peace.
