DaCunha’s Dispatch: Pink Out for Breast Cancer Awareness

October 29, 2025 by Staff Writer

Pink Out for Breast Cancer Awareness

Hello everyone! The start of the new school year means Friday Night Lights and cheering on our outstanding Fairhaven High School football team. On Friday, 10/17/25, the Fairhaven Blue Devils took Bourne during the Homecoming game and celebrated Senior Night, honoring the many talented football players that have shown their dedication to the team throughout their time at FHS.

This year’s game was about more than just Homecoming. Fairhaven High School joined the SouthCoast Breast Cancer Awareness initiative, an effort that received great support from the athletes and school community. This initiative helps to raise awareness and provide meaningful assistance to local patients and families impacted by breast cancer. Every dollar raised goes to the Nicole Podkowa Caregiver Fund, which provides critical financial support to patients undergoing cancer treatment right here in the SouthCoast.

Several Southcoast Health doctors, many who have cared for families in this area for years, also took part in supporting the event. They expressed how meaningful it was to see the next generation stepping up to make a difference, giving a true reflection of Southcoast’s mission to go beyond medicine and care for the whole community.

Dr. David Chesney said: “On behalf of Southcoast Health, I would like to thank the FHS athletes for taking part in this year’s Southcoast Health Pink Out for Breast Cancer Initiative. Your support helps raise important funds for many patients and their families affected by cancer. I have been honored to serve this community for nearly 30 years, and today, standing alongside these young men who are committed to making a difference, I feel such pride and gratitude. I’ve cared for many of them since they were born, and volunteering at this event and seeing them now giving back to their community is truly rewarding.”

Dr. Valentina DaCunha (disclosure, she’s my mother) wanted to make sure she thanked the volunteers for helping to hand out flyers during the game.
