For Black History Month, South Coast Cinemaniacs presents Oscar Micheaux’s WITHIN OUR GATES (1920). A landmark film of African-American cinema, it screens like a direct response to D.W. Griffith’s BIRTH OF A NATION (1915). Following a schoolteacher’s (Evelyn Preer) journey to raise funds for her underfunded, Southern school, Micheaux depicts the problems she encounters as a black woman in the South and North.
The film screens on February 12 at 5:30 PM at the Millicent Library on 45 Center St., Fairhaven. All are welcome, and the event is free! Use the Walnut St. entrance to access the auditorium.
South Coast Cinemaniacs meets the second Monday of the month, excluding holidays, to watch and discuss classic movies. For more information, email club president Beth Ann Gallagher at: southcoastcinemaniacs@gmail.com
