Cape Verdean parade recognizes CV heritage

July 18, 2019 by Staff Writer

New Bedford held its 47th annual Cape Verdean Recognition Parade on Saturday, 7/6. The procession and fair at the end celebrate Cape Verdean heritage and more than 150 years in the region. Parade Marshal Gail Fortes led the parade from Buttonwood park to the Cape Verdean Veterans’ Memorial on Purchase Street, downtown.

In 1848 Lewis Temple invented the toggle harpoon, called Temple’s Toggle or Temple’s Iron, which revolutionized whale hunting.
