Kyle Bueno
My name is Kyle Bueno and I am running as a Write-in Candidate for the open Fairhaven School Committee seat. I am proud my parents called this historic, beautiful, blue-collar community their home to raise my older brother and me. My mom immigrated to the United States from Saint Michael, Azores. She is a proud 14-year 1199SEIU employee at Tobey Hospital, having worked as a Certified Nurse Assistant and now working as a sitter for patients. My dad immigrated to the United States from Campinas, Sao Paulo, Brazil. He has been working at Titleist as a Machine Operator for the past 24 years. They saw America, and Fairhaven in particular, as a place to raise a family and achieve anything through hard work, being kind, honest, and compassionate.
I am a byproduct of the Fairhaven Public School system as I attended East Fairhaven School, Rogers School, Hastings Middle School and Fairhaven High School. It was at Rogers School where I found a passion for the Arts in 4th grade and played the violin. This initial involvement led me to other opportunities to get more involved. It was in High School where I served as Class President for the Class of 2014 for four years, served as Student Representative for the entire student body in Fairhaven in School Committee meetings and played soccer. I also received the Outstanding Community Award back in 2015 for helping register millennials to vote in elections.
After high school, I went on to receive my bachelor’s degree from Bridgewater State University in Economics with minors in Political Science and Portuguese.
Bridgewater reminded me so much of home as I was a part of a diverse, blue-collar community. I was involved in Alternative Winter and Spring Break Trips, learning about immigration in Florida, Habitat for Humanity in Connecticut, and installing water refiltration systems in Cambodia. I was also involved in Student Government, representing 11,000 students on the Board of Trustees, working with the President and members of his cabinet to discuss campus issues like the budget, residential housing, campus dining services, and safety. The skills and perspectives I gained from these experiences can be valuable as a member on the School Committee. Now, I am pursuing a Master’s in Public Administration back at Bridgewater State University.
If elected to the Committee, I want to help continue moving our schools and community forward. Some of the issues I want to explore are expanding the foreign language requirement to our elementary schools, looking at initiatives surrounding social/emotional/mental health, continue promoting an inclusive environment particularly for our LGBTQ community because, as a gay man myself, I understand the societal pressures of fully embracing yourself, and collaborating with our phenomenal police and fire departments in keeping our schools safe.
We can do just that and so much more!
On Monday, April 1st, please write my name and address under the open School Committee seat: Kyle Bueno, 117 Pleasant Street, Fairhaven, MA, 02719. Thank you!
