The New Bedford Whaling Museum and the YWCA of Southeastern Mass. are inviting young artists between the ages of 12 and 22 to explore the impact of women in the region through original works of art created for IGNITE: A Youth Showcase of Art Inspired by Historic Women of the SouthCoast. Artworks in any medium will be considered for the showcase as long as they celebrate one or more of the women profiled by the history project Lighting the Way: Historic Women of the SouthCoast. Art selected to be a part of the Ignite showcase will be exhibited or performed at the Whaling Museum on March 12, 2020, 6-8 p.m. The submission deadline is February 23, 2020. IGNITE is supported in part by Mass Humanities, through a grant that was made possible by Mass Cultural Council. Details and submission guidelines: www.historicwomensouthcoast.org.
The Whaling Museum is offering an optional free Lighting the Way workshop for young artists on February 17 to help artists learn about interpreting themes when creating works of art. The workshop is offered at two different times during the day: from 10 a.m. to noon, and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Advance registration is required.
