“The Orchid Thief”, this month’s selection, is a “story of beauty and obsession” written by Susan Orlean based on her investigation of the arrest of horticulturist John Laroche and a group of Seminole Indians for stealing rare orchids in the Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve in Florida. Laroche planned to clone the rare orchids and sell them for “a small fortune to impassioned collectors” of which there are many in the world.
