“The Rabbit Proof Fence” (1000 miles of fencing across the southwestern Australian desert to keep out rabbits) written by Doris Pilkington has been chosen for January’s book discussion.
The selection is a true story of three young Aboriginal girls, in 1931, that were taken from their homes by the Australian government so that they could be trained to be cultural white. Missing their homes the girls escape, and following the rabbit proof fence they make their harrowing trip home.
The book will be discussed at Fairhaven’s Millicent Library, 45 Center St., Fairhaven, on Thurs., 1/17 at 10 a.m., in the library’s meeting room, accessible through the Walnut Street entrance.
The discussion is free and open to the public. The book is available at the library or through the library’s web-site, http://www.millicentlibrary.org. For more info, call Norma Markey at 508-993-3745.
