In late July, more Piping Plovers arrive from nearby sites as the nesting season winds down and the shorebird migration begins. The wetland habitats at West Island come to life as a stopover for species such as Semipalmated Plovers, Short-billed Dowitchers, and Greater Yellowlegs, while Snowy and Great Egrets gather in the salt marsh.
Along the intertidal shore, Common and Roseate Terns congregate after nesting on offshore islands, and Laughing Gulls pass through in high numbers. Come witness the migration on another summer evening at West Island!
Items to bring/notes: birding equipment (binoculars or scope, camera, bird), footwear for walking along the beach, bug spray.
Pre-register online. For questions contact Jamie Bogart at jbogart@lloydcenter.org.
