Bikes for All

March 3, 2021 by Staff Writer

We are thrilled that the long-awaited Mattapoisett Rail Trail connection to Depot Street is opening this year. To celebrate, Mattapoisett Recreation (MATTREC) and the Friends of the Mattapoisett Bicycle and Recreational Path (the Friends) have teamed up to ensure that every Mattapoisett resident/family has an opportunity to fully enjoy it. This new initiative is called Bikes for All. We are asking for donations of gently used bicycles, children’s sizes with training wheels to adult 26” bikes, to be given to any town resident in need of a bike. Any outgrown children’s bicycle may also be traded in for a larger bike.

So, take a look in the corners of your garage/basement or shed. Is there an unused bike that is taking up space? If so, dust it off and call at Jane at MATTREC (508-758-4548) for pickup.

During this time of increased demand, higher prices and waiting lists for new bicycles, recycling unused bikes is one way to make Mattapoisett Rail Trail accessible to all town residents!

If you are handy and have some knowledge of bicycles, we’d love you to join us in our quest! We will be refurbishing the gently used bikes and are in need of volunteers who have the knowledge to help make this happen. If interested, please call Jane at 508-758-4548.

If you would like to make a donation to help the Friends purchase/repair bicycles, please make your checks out to: Friends of the Mattapoisett Bike Path, PO Box 1336, Mattapoisett, MA 02739. Please specify on your check that your contribution is for Bikes for All.

The Friends is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization, so contributions to the Friends for Bikes for All are tax deductible to the extent permitted by law. The Friends will apply 100% of contributions toward the bicycles.
