Annual procession welcomes Earth Day in Southcoast

April 17, 2019 by Staff Writer

New Bedford held a “Love Mother Earth” procession on Thursday, 4/11, in downtown New Bedford as part of AHA! night’s Sustainable Southcoast celebration. The group gathered on Market Street to crown Mother Earth (Terry Wolkowicz) and Father Ocean (Jamie Jacquart), then marched through the downtown historic district. Eco-floats and costumed participants were mindful of the three R’s when making their gear: reduce, reuse, recycle. Earth day is on April 22, with events honoring the earth happening all around that date. The world’s largest environmental movement, Earth Day is celebrated in nearly 192 countries. The first Earth Day was on April 22, 1970. To learn more about Earth Day or to find events you can join, visit https://www.earthday.org
