Westport Historical Society Annual Meeting, Westport’s Macomber Turnip: Fact, Fiction, and Future. Wed., 10/8, 5 p.m., Westport Grange, 931 Main Road, Westport MA
Please join us for our annual meeting and program!
The annual meeting will include the presentation of the annual history award to Blair Walker in recognition of her many creative exhibitions highlighting the lives of Westport women through the centuries, and for ensuring the ongoing care and interpretation of the historical society’s collection of clothing in all its forms, from bloomers to wedding gowns!
The short business meeting will be followed by a program examining the origin and local lore of Westport’s very own heirloom vegetable, the Macomber Turnip. Join seed saver Bill Braun and other local farmers to explore the origins of the turnip. Who were some of the local turnip seed keepers and growers? What is the best way to cook the Macomber turnip? Can the Macomber turnip grow beyond the borders of Westport? Is there truth to the farming tradition “wait ‘til they’ve been hit by three frosts to get the best flavor.” Bring along your favorite turnip recipes and any turnip stories! Suggested donation $5.
Co-sponsored by the Westport Historical Society and the Westport Grange. Westport Historical Society, 508-636-6011, westporthistory@westporthistory.net; www.wpthistory.org
