“It’s one of my givebacks,” said Acushnet Town Administrator, Jamie Kelley, in between flipping burgers and hot dogs at the annual cookout he sponsored on 6/21/24 at the Senior Center, adding he has done it in every town he’s ever worked in. “They welcome you and they pay my salary.”
“If I want to do my job, I need to learn about a community and they (seniors) are one of the greatest resources,” he said. “Government forgets seniors and veterans too quickly.”
Meanwhile, inside, a full room of seniors listened to the music of Dan Smith while they waited for the food to cook.
Shirley Chace and Eileen Taylor waited off to the side in a more quiet area.
“We’re her to have fun, like everybody else,” said Ms. Taylor.
“Oh, it’s our second home,” said Cid with her friend Dilly.
The senior center is located at 59 1/2 So. Main Street in Acushnet, call 508-998-0280 to learn about daily programs.
