Acushnet sees drastic drop in use of Fentanyl, Narcan

January 16, 2020 by Staff Writer

From Acushnet Fire & EMS Department Facebook page, posted on 1/6/20.

“The new year allows us to report data from the previous 12 months. This report is cause for hope. As you can see, the incidents at which we have administered Narcan (used to reverse opioid overdoses) has dropped off considerably over the past five years (red bars). In 2017 we argued that we would see a reduction in Fentanyl administrations (yellow bars) if our Paramedics were allowed to use non-opioid medications for pain relief. The result? Double the use of IV Tylenol in 2019 than the previous year (without a single complaint from our patients) and a drastic cut in Fentanyl use. Small, but we think important, steps in the right direction.” Graphic from Acushnet Fire & EMS Department Facebook page.

The graph shows the drastic decrease in the use of Fentanyl (yellow bars) after paramedics in Acushnet were allowed to use IV Tylenol (blue bars) starting in 2017. Graphic from the Acushnet Fire & EMS Department Facebook page, posted on 1/6/20.
