The town of Acushnet held a Veterans Day ceremony at its Veterans Memorial on 11/11/22. The event featured remarks by Selectboard chairperson David Wojnar, several musical selections, the reading of the famous letter by Civil War Union Soldier Sullivan Ballou, the national anthem, and the raising of the flag by seven veterans representing all five branches of the US miltary.
Mr. Wojnar told the crowd that the day was about those who served in the military. He said he gets nervous about speaking for Veterans Day because he is in the presence of “some pretty amazing people and amazing families.”
“The only thing I can say is, ‘thank you,’” he said.
Mr. Wojnar introduced seven veterans representing five branches of the military, as they took the wreath to the flag pole and then raised the flag: Joe Costa and James Long, Army; Bob Ferreira, Air Force; Elvin Bramos, Coast Guard; Cliff Hathaway, Marines; Tom Mello and Bill Perry, Navy.
Mr. Wojnar asked for the school aged children to approach the podium. He then told them to shake the hands of the veterans standing behind him.
“If it wasn’t for these folks, you guys wouldn’t have the opportunity to live the life that you have now,” said Mr. Wojnar.
The ceremony is available on the town’s YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FU-S7bDhXT8
