The town of Acushnet will have two contested races on the ballot this year, with two candidates running for one seat on the Selectboard, and three candidates running for two seats on the School Committee.
Eric Chew is challenging incumbent David Wojnar for a seat on the Selectboard. Mr. Wojnar served on the SB from 1998 to 2016. He returned to the board in 2020 and running to retain his seat. Mr. Chew is new to the SB, but not to town government. He serves on the Finance Committee and is involved in other volunteer activities in the town. Mr. Chew’s signatures had not been certified by press time.
The School Committee has two seats up for election. Incumbent Ronald Houde, Jr. has returned papers to retain his seat. Melissa Cordeira and Ebony McGlynn have also returned papers for that committee.
No other races are contested.
The election is on Saturday, 5/13. The last day to take out papers has passed. The last day to return papers is Friday, 3/24. The last day to withdraw a nomination is 4/11, so the names on the ballot are not yet final.
Town Clerk Pamela Labonte has taken out papers for her seat, but as of press time she had not returned them.
Other races include: Moderator, with incumbent Leslie Dakin running for re-election; Board of Assessors, with new candidate Robert Brown not yet returning his papers; Board of Health, with incumbent Robert Medeiros running for this seat; Library Trustee, with incumbent Joan Howland running for her seat*; Cemetery Board, with Joanne Cioper running for re-election; Park Commissioner, with incumbent Michael Matton not yet returning his papers; Planning Commissioner, with incumbent Bryan Deschamps not yet returning his papers; Planning Commissioner unexpired term with candidate Steven Boucher not yet returning papers; Tree Warden, with incumbent Norman Fredette running for re-election.
Commissioner of Trust Funds has two vacant seats with no one taking out papers for them;
Register to Vote/Mail In Ballots
The last day to register as a voter in the town of Acushnet for the 5/13 election is Wednesday, May 3, 2023 at 5 p.m.
The last day to apply for a mail-in ballot is Monday, May 8, at 5 p.m.
The election is on Saturday, 5/13/23. Polls are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. All precincts vote at Acushnet Elementary School, 800 Middle Road.
