A Moment for Civil Discourse

June 10, 2026 by Staff Writer

By Melissa Batchilder, Fairhaven for All

As the school year ends and newly elected officials prepare to step into their roles, Fairhaven finds itself in a moment that asks something important of us.

These transitions — in our classrooms, our government, and our neighborhoods — remind us that community is built through relationships: across generations, across differences, and across the welcome we extend to newcomers who now call this place home.

With new voices entering public office and important decisions ahead, we have an opportunity to model what healthy civic life looks like. That means:

Listening with curiosity

Speaking with respect

Disagreeing without dehumanizing

Remembering that our neighbors are not our opponents

Civil discourse isn’t a luxury. It’s the foundation of a functioning town. When we practice it, we make Fairhaven safer, kinder, and more welcoming for everyone — especially for families raising children who are watching how adults behave.

Where We Go From Here

Research shows that communities with strong social ties and diverse perspectives are more resilient, more innovative, and better at solving shared problems. Unity isn’t about sameness — it’s about choosing connection over conflict.

So as we head into summer, let’s choose the path that strengthens us:

Decency.

Respect.

A Fairhaven where every resident — long‑timer or newcomer — feels they belong.
