Exhibit Launch and Virtual Concert: Thursday, 5/14, 7:00pm- 8:00pm
On Thursday, May 14th, the Fishing Heritage Center will launch our latest exhibit, We Came to Fish, We Came to Work: Stories of Immigration, with a concert celebrating cultural traditions. Join us at 7:00pm via Facebook Live for a virtual concert featuring local musicians Ana Vinagre, Candida Rose, and Johan Gundersen who will present songs from and about Portugal, Cape Verde, and Norway. We Came to Fish, We Came to Work: Stories of Immigration explores stories of immigration and cultural heritage on New Bedford’s working waterfront. Over the next 8 months, we will look at cultural heritage through a variety of programs including film screenings, cooking and craft demos, performances, and talks, which will be offered virtually until we are able to re-open the Center.
The Center’s 2020 exhibits and programs are funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Creative Commonwealth Initiative, and the Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Mattapoisett, and New Bedford Cultural Councils.

Kaare Ness is a true pioneer of the modern fishing industry. Born in Norway on the island of Karmøy in 1928, he began his fishing career at an early age when World War II interrupted his education. Due to diminishing stocks in Norway, Ness emigrated to the United States. He tried his luck with scallops on the East Coast before heading to the wild waters of Alaska and shifting his focus to the burgeoning industry of king crab fishing. Ness co-founded Trident Seafoods with his business partner, Chuck Bundrant. Together they developed one of the largest and most successful fishing companies along the West Coast, reaching from Seattle to the Aleutian Islands. Big Dreams from Karmøy to Hawaii is the story of a Norwegian immigrant who truly lived the American dream.
