After receiving two 55-gallon drums of hand sanitizer, the Acushnet Fire Department, led by Chief Kevin Gallagher, decided they needed to share. They gave one drum to Fairhaven (see 4/23/20 issue), and then …
“With enough set aside for our first responders we decided to get the sanitizer into the hands of one important at risk group, our senior citizens,” wrote the department on its Facebook page.
But, how to “divvy it up?”
They asked around, and received a hand pump from the Acushnet Department of Public Works; got 110 gallon jugs from Hood Milk via Evan White of White’s Brothers Dairy; more than 300 eight-ounce bottles from Andler Packaging, courtesy of Ed Andler connected to via Fire Lt. Brian Monte. Truly a team efford.
The Acushnet Council on Aging distributed the bottles along with the fresh produce bags they delivered last week (see 5/4/20 issue); and the Acushnet Housing Authority will deliver bottles to their 60 residents.
The school department also handed out bottles to families at their school work pickup day on 5/5.
“A big Thank You to Fire Chief Gallagher and his staff for giving us hand sanitizer to hand-out to families with packets,” wrote the Acushnet Public Schools on its Facebook page.
“All of the above was donated! Again, Acushnet (and friends) you rock. Fifty-five gallons, to one gallon, to eight ounces. It’s easy when you have friends!” wrote the Acushnet FD. “As additional donations of this important product are received we are in a position to quickly get it out of the fire station and onto the hands of the people who need it most.”
