The New Bedford Whaling Museum is inviting the community to join a public art initiative, Lighting the Way for ALL, marking the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution recognizing women’s right to vote. The public will decide which of the 10 featured women from the Museum’s project Lighting the Way: Historic Women of the SouthCoast will be represented in large outdoor artwork at the end of the summer. Local middle and high school students have narrated the stories of different women from the project in videos that will be released online. The community is invited to vote on which women should be celebrated through the public art, which will be unveiled in August. Voting is open for the entire month of May at www.historicwomensouthcoast.org.
The women in Lighting the Way for ALL have unique and remarkable histories, and played a variety of roles in their communities: educators, artists, political activists, crusaders for social justice, and politicians. The videos feature the stories of Emma Louise Piper (1845-1915), Elizabeth Terry Delano (1845-1933), Marie Equi (1872-1952), Cecil Davis (1877-1955), Nora Ouimette Duprey (1909-1987), Jennie Horne (1920-1998), Mary Vermette (1934-2003), Geraldine Gomes (1938-2011), Rosalyn Poll Brooker (1928-2016), and Marial M. Harper (1934-2016).
