The Coronavirus, Our Health, and The Economy
Let me say this from the outset: I don’t mean to minimize the impact and seriousness of the coronavirus.
I certainly support the efforts of the government to slow down and mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. No doubt the social distancing, face masks, and handwashing are effective. But to think you can prevent yourself from being exposed to it is an illusion. We all will come in contact with it.
Now that we have had some time to learn about the nature and facts about it, a few facts have become evident. One, the mortality among the young and healthy is quite low. However, it’s much higher with the elderly, particularly the elderly with health issues.
The other is that it’s becoming increasingly evident that this virus originated in a Chinese lab* which was very careless in its safety standards. It escaped and quickly spread.
The Chinese and the World Health Organization, which is a puppet of the Chinese, should be held accountable for it because they knowingly withheld knowledge of it. Thank God that we have Trump as president. he banned flights from China on January 31, thereby giving us valuable time to prepare for it.
However, there is another aspect which I believe even more serious. It is the economic consequences. Let me say for the short term, I believe the government stimulus and funding to compensate workers and business is right and necessary, but to continue down this path will have far worse consequences. To think that you can print money which isn’t backed up by goods, services and other commodities is a sad illusion. For without these, money will lose its value and you will have rampant inflation.
I don’t know what’s going on in the mind of some of our government officials. Here’s an example, I went down to Fort Phoenix. The parking lot was closed. There was a sign saying stay home. What are they thinking? We are to stay closeted in our homes? I think that, as a free society, we should have the ability to make our own choices. I think we are responsible enough to maintain our distance.
The president has put forth a well reasoned and thorough plan to reopen our country. He has consulted with both medical and economic officials.
I thank God that we have a president who loves this country, who understands business and trade, is not a career politician.
He is the only president who has held China accountable.
John Pond, Fairhaven
*Editor’s Note: There is no evidence the virus orignated in a Chinese lab. Credible scientists agree that the virus was not “human-engineered,” although it is possible that it was spread by a lab worker after jumping from an animal, most likely a bat, to a human.
