So much to write about in this space tonight.
First, our recent tragedy: Jackson’s Variety had a devastating fire that destroyed the building, and, of course, the business along with it. Owner Colin “Jack” Jackson will have to find a new place to live. His daughter Tina no longer has a job.
They did manage to get out, though, without any serious injuries, thanks to a few passersby who ran into the building and helped Jack get out.
Tina refused to leave her father there to die alone, and they were both lucky that a few physically strong people showed up when they did.
That’s community, that’s how we take care of each other. It was a dangerous thing they did. And Tina’s devotion to her dad…Well, let me just say I hope I’m never tested like that. See page 12 for the story.
And, I suspect, we’ll be doing a follow-up or two. If you have any picures of the old place that you’re willing to share, please send them in. And stories, too. Send us some stories. I’m sure Jack and Tina and Colleen and Randy will be happy to know about them.
A place like that, with penny candy back in the day, smokes and the newspaper, soda and ice cream, is the kind of place that makes memories for kids in the neighborhood. It’s just heartbreaking to see it go down the way it did. There’s information on a fundraising page for the family, too.
In another matter…
This is the last week to take out nomination papers. We have a couple of races in Fairhaven, but, hey…c’mon…the more the merrier. See page 3 for that.
And, one last thing. Grab your popcorn and watch the Selectboard meeting from 1/29. Jump right to the 1:50’ish mark and watch our own Dan Freitas tell the world that if we change the name of the Board of Selectmen to the Select Board, he will no longer be a man.
I kid you not, I could NOT make this up.
But, alas, that’s a really fun one for another time. I’m on deadline, gotta get this baby to bed.
I guess I’ll have to write a blog about it. I’m hoping to unveil my new website with a new blog soon.
