“Designing Vaccines; The Challenge of Keeping Farm-Raised Fish Healthy (Yes, fish need vaccinations too.)” We’re pleased to announce that our next guest will be Erin Bromage, Ph.D., an immunologist and associate professor at the University of Mass. Dartmouth.
Vaccines have been used as a safe & effective means of lowering the risk of communicable diseases and eradicating devastating diseases such as small pox and rinderpest. Vaccines can also keep our food healthy and are particularly valuable in agricultural and aquacultural practices, where animals are raised in conditions ideal for high disease transmission. Yet the science behind them is not without challenges.
Erin will discuss his lab’s efforts to design a universal vaccine for use in farm-raised fish. Because their physiology and habitat differ strikingly from mice and humans, the most immunologically well-studied species, fish represent an especially unique challenge. Erin has expertise in immunology and disease epidemiology. He completed his Ph.D. at James Cook University in Australia; his post-doc research at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, College of William and Mary. He works collaboratively with farmers from around the world to help them resolve issues with aquatic animal health through better management and vaccination. He also serves as a fact-based advocate for countering online misinformation related to vaccine safety and effectiveness.
