Press Release
Friday, March 27th will find a community celebration happening at New Bedford Art Museum/ArtWorks!. For the 7th year NBAM/ArtWorks! recognizes those who truly impact the arts community with the Patrons of the Arts Award. In an area that is so highly populated by artists and musicians, the Art Museum feels it is fitting to recognize these patrons’ contributions which have greatly impacted and elevated the south coast and beyond.
This year NBAM/ArtWorks! has chosen to honor Irene and Norman Buck and the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra. Both have long outstanding histories of advocacy for the visual and performing arts as they built creative opportunities for communities and cultural organizations through programming, meaningful leadership roles, and a passion for education.
Irene and Norman Buck have left their mark on New Bedford, through her role as Executive Director of ArtWorks! Partners for the Arts and Community, Inc. and his development of the Ropeworks! Artist Condominiums.
Irene has served as Director of the MA Alliance for Arts Education, Chair of MASSCreative and of the Westport Cultural Council from 2015-2017, and on the Board of the MA Chapter of the National Museum of Women in the Arts. She is a current member of the Advisory Council for Creative Connections, a program of the Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts.
An artist in his own right, Norm is a multi-talented maker who works in a variety of media. His art ranges from woodworking and painting to sculpture and photography — many of his works bringing a smile to the viewers’ faces. Norm’s love of birding and nature inspired him to develop and lay the foundation for the Annual Rubber Duck Derby at Allen’s Pond Sanctuary which will celebrate 17 years of conservation efforts, educational programs, and environmental advocacy this coming summer.
Founded in 1915 by New Bedford High School music teacher Clarence Arey, the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra has evolved into one of the premier professional regional orchestras in the United States. The NBSO is a professional orchestra that annually presents a concert series of classical and pops music with internationally acclaimed guest artists, as well as an outstanding chamber music series.
In addition, the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra’s innovative and nationally recognized educational programs reach 8,000 students each year.
The NBSO also has an outstanding chamber music series, a growing youth orchestra program, a community engagement program, and active partnerships with dozens of other cultural and arts organizations in New Bedford and surrounding communities.
The evening’s festivities will begin with a cocktail hour and live music in the galleries at 6 p.m. followed by a speaking program at 7 p.m. The community is invited to join the Trustees and members of NBAM/ ArtWorks! for this free evening reception at the museum, 608 Pleasant Street, New Bedford.
